QUESTION: WHY IS IMRT IMPORTANT?

IMRT stands for "INTENSITY MODULATED RADIATION THERAPY". IMRT is an innovative technological advancement which allows the oncologists to maximize the dose delivered to the target tumor area while minimizing the dose to the healthy surrounding tissues. IMRT is a "dynamic" treatment advancement as it delivers heterogeneous doses within the tumor in order to achieve a much better treatment outcome with far fewer complications for the patient. (IMRT is not appropriate for all cases. Oncologists will consult with patients to determine if IMRT would be beneficial.)
